The importance of providing excellent customer service.
METRO handles the daily route planning with help from AMCS’ optimisation suite and mobile solution. The international wholesaler METRO Cash & Carry is represented in 29 countries with 544 warehouses. The company employs 106,878 people and has an annual turnover of 31.6 billion Euros. In Denmark, METRO Cash & Carry has 5 warehouses, and the 40,000 annual drops are conducted by 21 trucks and 5 vans for ad hoc orders.
METRO Cash & Carry for professional customers is growing rapidly, and recently, the company decided to insource the delivery and distribution set-up in order to increase service levels.
Our professional business had outgrown manual planning. With 40,000 drops a year in Denmark alone, we needed AMCS’ planning solution to help with daily route planning.
Pia T. Nielsen says, “We were no longer able to handle the planning in Excel and note books. We run a professional business and we needed a professional partner who could help us optimise our routes and ensure that goods were delivered in a timely manner.”
Now, METRO uses AMCS route planning system for planning the daily routes of all 5 warehouses. A task which used to take several hours, now takes merely 5 minutes. Via AMCS’ mobile solution, routes, maps and information on each drop are available to the drivers on iPad minis from which manual changes can be made if necessary.
Pia T. Nielsen explains, “With AMCS’ solution, our routes are optimised, and our drivers can focus on giving our customers the best possible service.”
Pia T. Nielsen says, “AMCS’ solution also provides us with KPIs on e.g. capacity utilisation and costs per drop. Our consultants now realise how they can use the system to improve their own accounts. It enables them to identify prospects in specific areas in order to lower cost per drop per trip. Moreover, based on existing master routes, they also have the opportunity to proactively settle cost-efficient delivery contracts with the customer. Thereby, the system serves two purposes and the fact that our route planning system can be used strategically for developing the business has really caught the attention of our headquarters!”, Pia T. Nielsen adds.
